Lasik Risks

The risks incurred during Lasik eye surgery are thankfully few. However, as with any other surgical procedure there can be complications and those that occur during lasik surgery can be irreversable. Fortunately, these complications and risks can be avoided by both the lasik doctor and by you.

When meeting with your lasik doctor he will discuss the whole procedure with you and explain the risks of having lasik surgery along with the side effects and complications that may result from undergoing the procedure.  Your doctor should also explain what precautions you need to take both before and after the lasik surgery.
Possible Lasik Risks

-Over or under correction of vision.

This can be solved by using glasses, contact lenses (in this case the vision is slightly improved and the glasses or contact lenses are different from the ones used before the surgery) or enhancements. Sometimes a minor procedure is required to achieve perfect results and sharp vision and this is often the quickest and simplest answer.

-Corneal scarring and irregular astigmatism.

In addition to the high risk of developing a corneal infection, especially after the surgery, this can also be due to a lack of hygiene and the patient’s carelessness. The inability to wear contact lenses is also a risk for those who undergo the Lasik procedure.

-Night Blindness.

Some people suffer from night blindness and have problems driving at night. In this case, they usually wear glasses when driving. Occasionally people do not see as well as they used to before the surgery, this is possibly due to a loss of the best-corrected visual acuity.

-A decrease in contrast sensitivity or sharpness.

This can happen when the patient has 20/20 vision but he or she still cannot see clearly, and an object can appear fuzzy. There is also the possibility of developing some flap problems, like irregular, incomplete, entirely cut off flaps, or even the growth of cells under the flap.

Temporary Lasik Side Effects Include:

Discomfort
Pain
Blurred vision
Irritation
Dryness
Light sensitivity
Double vision
Glowing haloes around light sources at night
Small red patches on the white area of the eye may also occur.

All of the above mentioned lasik risks and complications are very rare occurances, and should you experience any of them, you probably won’t experience any of the other lasik side effects. It’s best that you are aware of them before deciding to go ahead with the lasik surgery.
